Yes, everyone goes through this when they get started. Like Mike i had a big (30) year gap in riding. You certainly will feel more secure/confident about a 250-mc than a 650 - at the beginning. I had the same considerations. But a friend told me, i would get tired of it and recommended me at least the 535 (Virago). Well i bought a 650 - and i didn't regret one second. I even had to kiss the road once (by 200 km and because i felt too secure - absolutely my own fault). I think you will grow out of the 250 in about 3 month. Buy the Savage, be extra carefull the first 600 miles or so - and you will feel more satisfied for every mile/hour you ride. And that goes on for ever.
